Over the last year my Foundation has continued to increase the range and scope our programs with the launch of an exciting new tag rugby program and we have started delivering in schools around Fiji.

The program is designed for primary school children in years 4 and 5 and aims to improve the range, difficulty and quality of the young people’s skills and techniques. The program will develop pupils’ competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities whilst developing the consistency with which they use and perform skills with precision, control and fluency.

Rugby, as Fiji’s national sport, will be the vehicle to deliver the program and introducing “Petero’s Tag Rugby”, a new and exciting form of the sport, will encourage all participants to be fully-engaged.

Petero’s Tag Rugby recognises that early childhood experiences are critical to the development of the skills, attitudes and confidence required to become an active participant in sport and recreation in later life. The Foundation aims to provide a positive introduction for children to sport and create positive and memorable experiences. The objective is to explore fundamental movements, actions and ideas and repeat fine and gross motor skills which will increase control and coordination.

Suva Primary School, Chauhan Memorial Primary School, Lami Primary School and Stella Maris Primary School were the first to experience the program which culminated in a Tag Rugby Festival at their school.

Mrs Vira from Stella Maris Primary School said, “The Petero Civoniceva Foundation’s Tag Rugby program has been inspiring, encouraging and enjoyable for my students.” Mr Singh, head teacher of Suva Primary School echoed those sentiments, “This initiative was very helpful for kids to learn Tag Rugby and at the same time they taught children how to be healthy and look after themselves.”

We are excited to engage more schools in our Petero’s Tag Rugby program and hope that we can provide more people of Fiji “a sporting chance for a brighter future”
